Written while living in the beautiful state of Vermont.
He was pure as snow but he drifted, drifted away from me.
Now I’m as blue as the forget-me-nots I’m holding.
I’m telling you hoping you will see.
He’s looser than this old guitar string, to him good love don’t mean a thing.
He’s crooked as the country road he drove me down,
before he tossed me in the lost and found.
He’d steal the saddle off a nightmare, he’d shoot the moon down on a dare,
He’s meaner than he ought to be allowed to be,
if you go with him you’ll be as blue as me.
He was pure as snow but he drifted, drifted away from me.
Now I’m as blue as the forget-me-nots I’m holding.
Before you look at him take a look at me.
I close my eyes but I still see him, I’ve closed my heart but I still dream,
I’ve closed my door against this love a rising tide,
but when my house is gone where will I hide?
He’s faster than the flooded river, he’s hotter than love in July,
He’s cheaper than a jug of three dollar wine,
but Lord he bought and sold this heart of mine.
He was pure as snow but he drifted, drifted away from me.
Now I’m as blue as the forget-me-nots I’m holding.
If you go with him you’ll be as blue as me.
If you go with him you’ll be as blue as me.
